What Actually Happens in a Coaching Session?

Curious about coaching but not sure what to expect? Here's exactly what happens in a coaching session — and why it might be the most useful hour of your week.

If you've never worked with a coach before, it's completely natural to wonder what you're actually signing up for. Is it therapy? Is it someone telling you what to do? Is it just an expensive conversation?

The answer is none of the above and that surprises a lot of people.

Here's what actually happens.

You lead. I listen.

A coaching session isn't a lecture or a consultation. I'm not there to give you a list of things to do or tell you what I think you should do. You bring whatever is on your mind - a decision you're wrestling with, a situation that's been circling, a goal you can't seem to move towards - and we work through it together. You talk. I listen deeply, reflect back what I'm hearing and ask the right kind of questions that help you see things differently.

The questions are the point

Most people, when they sit down and are asked the right questions in the right space, already know more than they think they do. They know what they want. They know what's holding them back. They just haven't had the space to hear themselves think. That's what a coaching session creates. Not answers from me - clarity from you.

What a typical session looks like

Every session is different because every client is different. But in general you can expect:

✔ A check in - We discuss where are you right now and what do you want to focus on today?

✔ Exploration - we dig into the topic, challenge assumptions and look at it from different angles

✔ Insight - When something shifts, becomes clearer or lands differently

✔ Action - You leave with clarity, a decision or a concrete next step

✔ Reflection - This is what are you taking away from the session?

Sessions are 60 minutes, held via Zoom, and completely confidential.

What happens after the session

This is where the real work begins. A coaching session doesn't end when you close Zoom. In fact, some of the most powerful moments happen in the hours and days that follow. When something that was said lands differently, when you notice a pattern you hadn't seen before, or when you make a decision you'd been putting off for months.

That's not an accident. It's how good coaching works.

The questions, insights and commitments from your session stay with you. You'll find yourself thinking about them on a walk, in the car, in the middle of a meeting. That ongoing reflection is part of the process - and it's often where the biggest shifts happen.

Between sessions you might:

  • Take an action you committed to and notice what comes up
  • Journal or reflect on what surfaced during the session
  • Simply sit with a new perspective and let it settle
  • Notice old habits or patterns showing up differently

By the time you come to your next session you'll have lived with the work — and that makes the next conversation even richer.

Coaching isn't something that happens to you once a week. It's something that travels with you.

It's not therapy — and it's not mentoring

Coaching is focused on the present and future. Where you are now and where you want to get to. It's not about unpacking your past. And unlike mentoring, I'm not drawing on my own experience to advise you - I'm drawing on your own thinking to help you find your own answers.

That said, my 19 years in senior leadership means I understand the world you're operating in. I know the pressure, the complexity and the decisions that keep you up at night. That context matters.

So who is it actually for?

Coaching works best for people who are:

  • Facing a decision, challenge or transition they can't think through alone
  • Ready to reflect honestly and take ownership of change
  • Committed to moving forward — not just talking about it

If that sounds like you, the best place to start is a free 30-minute discovery call. No pressure, no obligation — just a conversation about where you are and what's possible.
